My wife and I will be traveling to NZ in a couple weeks and plan on
doing quite a bit of driving. Can anyone tell me what I should expect
to pay for gas?

A couple of days ago I was paying NZ$ 1.09 per litre for 91 unleaded.

Don't ask for gas in either Australia or NZ - or that's what you'll get,
liquid petroleum gas which fuels many vehicles here.
Ir's petrol.

Yep....first time over, I asked for "unleaded gas." Poor b*stard looked at
me like I had three heads. Hope he mistook me for a seppo.....

It even brings culture shock when you find a place where there is still
driveway service -

In Tasmania recently, where there seemed to be a mix, 3 of us often managed
to fill the tank and clean the windows before the attendant got out of the
office.

Actually, that was part of the story too (since here and most other places I
have visited, the servos are attendant-staffed unless marked as
self-serve).....
