No, that route would take you through a National Park & defeat the
purpose of having said National Park to protect the Habitat.

You can however walk it, which is the best way to see it anyway ( and
organise transportation at the other end ).

No. The only way to shave a few minutes or miles off the
trip is the Mossburn to Five Rivers road (turn right at the
Five Rivers garage). There's no practical way of bypassing
Te Anau.

Allow a day each way. It's a longer trip than it looks.

Consider the flight in and /or out, 99% of the people I've taken in say the
flight is by far superior to the boat trip for scenery. And the round trip
ex Queenstown, Wanaka or Invercargill is only around 2 hours flight time.
This conbined with the boat trip should put the whole Milford experience at
around 5 hours or so, leaving the rest of the day free to pursue other
things

And time well spent - stay in Te Anau - go to the Italian Restaurant -
the best food in town.

Rather than going to Milford - why not do the Overnight trip in Dusky
Sound?
