Default TNT and Stewart

After the way DW pounded on Tony Stewart on Fox, did anyone besides me
think the TNT crew was bending over backwards to show him in a
positive light during the qualifying coverage?

No criticism of the TNT guys intended. When it's your job to report
on an event, it's always to your advantage to be on good terms with
the participants. It's just that I was struck by the stark contrast
between the two networks.

That would be highly doubtful. I'm sure contracts wouldn't allow it.
Unless of course, he works for NASCAR and then can work whereever NASCAR
sends him.

Does anyone miss Dr. Jerry Punch like I do?

Absolutely, I miss Bob Jenkins and Dr. Jerry Punch. They had a genuine love
of the sport that transcended money.

I was watching an early, early race not long ago on ESPN Classic. The race
was from maybe from the early 1980s, where both of them were SO YOUNG. They
were obviously broadcasting on a shoestring back then, and ESPN was a
fledgling network. I guess ESPN is still a fledgling network having lost
the big NASCAR contract.

Alas, ESPN built the sport up and then the sport abandoned them for the big
guys. One might have thought that NASCAR and ESPN could have grown
together.

There's a reference in the link below about "Matt Yokum, FOX and NBC
Star Personality". I was pretty sure I'd seen him on both sides of
the split season. He's a very talented reporter with an obvious good
relationship with many of the drivers. It makes sense to use him.

espn didn't build up nascar anymore than Walter Cronkite built up the Apollo
missions to the moon. espn broadcast, under a mutually negotiated contract and
for a profit, nascar races. when nascar, at the end of the espn contract,
decided to open the bidding for their product espn decided not to pay the going
rate. nascar didn't abandon espn anymore than espn abandoned nascar at the
height of their success. free enterprise and an open market system determined
the outcome.
