Default Cultural shock in Myanmar

Can anyone tell me about their travel experience in Myanmar? I want to know
more about their culture and life under the military regime.

Many many thanks,
Jess

Every mail in this newsgroup, even from honest, a-political travellers
will be criticised as a political statement.

Do you have a valid e-mail adress ?

Let me know, I wil drop you my report.

Myanmar is a backward but beautiful country. There are pushy touts in the
tourist areas, but "normal" people just go about their daily chores and mind
their own businesses like folks everywhere else. Your average, everyday
Burmese doesn't walk around in shackles. He doesn't wear a sad look on his
face and he doesn't cry out for democracy even in the safety and privacy of
his home. Most people are friendly and quite contented. Their problems are
mainly economic and their chief concerns are providing enough food and
clothing for the family. As such, sanctions and boycotts cause them to
suffer more than the military regime.

Come on, don't exaggerate. There is only the "Burma Action Group"
(which basically consists of one person, not a group) who claims that
travellers to Myanmar are the worst creatures on earth.

Don't care - discuss travel to Myanmar here in public and don't be
intimidated.

I was in Myanmar this may and I loved it. I spent time in Yangoon,
and Mandalay. In Yangoon the people were extremely polite and
courteous and friendly in a reserved sort of a way. I wandered the
streets at all hours and never felt threatened. In Yangoon don't miss
the dance and puppet show on the Peacock ship restaurant in the lake
I'm sorry I cant give more information but once your there you'll know
what I mean. The hotels and staff were first rate and cheap. The
market downtown was busy and fun as are most Asian markets. The
Indian presence in Yangoon is balanced by the Chinese presence in
Mandalay.

In Mandalay, I stayed at the Swan Hotel but next-door was the upscale
Sadona, very nice for under $100.00, the Swan was about $35.00. The
military presence was more noticeable in the North and Being an
American, I had quite a few people whisper to me "When will Mr. Bush
Come Here?" and "Please come here next!" But the common folks were
very friendly and I felt totally safe. I did encounter quite a few
Touts in Mandalay and I took some time to recognize the difference
between friendly locals showing off their community and professional
tour guides who would soon demand payment. Ask up front if someone is
excessively friendly if they expect payment. Usually the payment is
so small it is seldom a problem.

Good luck and have fun. I think you'll love it.
